Those of you who enjoy a good hike are likely always looking for the next best hiking spot, wherever in the world you may be. For us here at OROGOLD, we like nothing more than a hike along the coast, taking in the fresh ocean air and panoramic views, which is why we have put together some of the most beautiful coastal hiking trails around the world.
Wales Coast Path, Wales, UK
The Welsh coastline has always been known for its natural beauty, and ever since the Wales Coast Path was launched in 2012, people are able to fully enjoy this gorgeous coastline. At 870 miles long, most people choose to hike just a section of it, although many full hikes have been completed. The massive scale of the trail means that it passes through several incredible spots, including three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, two national parks, 11 National Nature Reserves, and 14 stretches of Heritage Coast. OROGOLD recommends that those of you who enjoy hiking in the company of dramatic coves and cliffs should head to the Gower Peninsula section, while those who prefer quiet beaches should hike around Cardigan Bay.
The Amalfi Coast, Italy
Until 1815, the Amalfi Coast was only accessible by sea, resulting in the towns, farms and villages that lined the looming limestone cliffs being connected only by staircases carved into the rock, which all led to mule tracks high up in the mountains. Now, one of the most popular hikes along the Amalfi Coast, the Sentiero degli Dei, makes use of these silent mule tracks and takes hikers along a path that hugs the wild cliffs of the coastline. The path is often eerily silent, passing by isolated farms, abandoned buildings, and panoramic viewpoints of the Amalfi Coast. Although the path is mostly relatively gentle, there are a few points where it can get quite narrow, and is situated right at the edge of the cliffs, so OROGOLD does not recommend this hike for those who are prone to vertigo or afraid of heights.
The Lycian Way, Turkey
The first long distance trail in Turkey, the Lycian Way measures 316 miles, and takes hikers for a once-in-a-lifetime experience deep into untouched Mediterranean landscape. The hike is considered to be quite difficult in some places, but the magnificent scenery that is encountered along the way makes it worth the effort. In addition to seeing plenty of caves, coves and stunning stretches of beaches, you will also encounter Greek temples, Roman ruins and Byzantine monasteries, while the scent of pine and wild strawberries accompanies you on your walk. There are plenty of amazing spots that you could stop and camp for the night, but there are also local inns and guesthouses along the way that welcome hikers, giving you the chance to immerse yourself in some local culture.
Whether you hike for exercise or simply as a hobby, the setting in which you hike can make all the difference to how much you enjoy the experience. From the Mediterranean coast of Turkey to the breathtakingly rugged Welsh coastline, these are some of OROGOLD’s favorite coastal hiking trails around the world.
