A view of the old Sacramento bridge

The capital of California, Sacramento is packed with history, culture and so much entertainment. For those visiting the city for the first time, here are five things that you should definitely not miss out on.

Explore the Crocker Art Museum
While Sacramento may be home to a number of different museums, the Crocker Art Museum is known for being one of the leading art institutions in the state, and is home to over 15,000 pieces of art. In addition to their expansive collection of Californian art, the museum also boasts permanent collections of artwork from all over the world, as well as an extensive ceramic collection. This museum has been running since 1885, but their continuously changing exhibits mean that returning visitors will always have something new to see.

Take a Stroll Around Old Sacramento
A National Historic Landmark, the district of Old Sacramento is a great way to soak up the region’s history and culture. This area is located along the Sacramento River, and there is just so much to do here, from taking a boat ride to sampling the goods at the many local eateries. Old Sacramento is also home to five museums, including the California State Railroad Museum and the Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum, giving you plenty of opportunities to really immerse yourself in the area’s history.

Sutter's Fort in Sacramento, USA

Tour Sutter’s Fort
Sutter’s Fort was built in the 1840’s by John Sutter, as a way to protect himself, as well as his crops and land, of which there were 150,000 acres. This became a hub for immigrants who travelled to the West, as many ended up settling here and helping to harvest all of the produce that was grown within the fort. Today, the fort has been restored to resemble its original appearance from the 1840’s, and there are tours offered throughout the day.

A Day at Fairytale Town
For those visiting Sacramento with young children, Fairytale Town is a must-visit. Although this may not be as modern as some of the other theme parks in the area, younger children will be thrilled at the concept of the park, which features characters and play sets from some of the most popular fairytales out there. There are also live animals that the youngsters can meet, from Peter Rabbit to Mary’s little lambs, resulting in a day filled with magic and excitement.

Capitol Park in Sacramento, USA

Visit Capitol Park
Since 1869, Capitol Park has been home to the California state government, as well as a museum that displays state artefacts. The neoclassical Capitol building is always a delight to explore and can be followed up with a walk around the rest of the park, where you will see a number of memorials that mark important events in California’s history, such as the Civil War. The park itself features manicured grounds and landscaped gardens, making it a gorgeous place to spend a sunny afternoon.

There is so much to see and do in Sacramento, with the city catering to just about every interest. From art to history to fairytales, these are just a few of the activities that you can involve yourself in when visiting the city.
