The Frisco Discovery Center, housed in a former warehouse space that received a $3 million renovation, is an arts, science and cultural hub that, since opening its doors in 2010, has become one of the city’s most popular attractions. From the inspiring collections of the Frisco Art Gallery to the fun-filled games in the National Video Game Museum, those that are planning on visiting the Frisco Discovery Center are best setting aside the entire day for this, as there is just so much to see and do.
Black Box Theatre
The Frisco Discovery Center is also home to the Black Box Theatre, which features contemporary lighting and sound equipment, and, with seating for 120 guests, is ideal for a variety of performances. Some of the current shows being hosted by the Black Box Theatre are Night of Improv by the Frisco Improv Players, and a musical by the Frisco Community Theater called The Last Five Years, which tells the story of a turbulent relationship between a composer and his wife.
National Video Game Museum
The National Video Game Museum recently opened in the Discovery Center earlier this year, much to the delight of gamers all across the state. This museum’s goal was to preserve and document the history of the video game industry, so that generations to come can learn about the way in which this modern part of life came about. The museum is designed to be as interactive as possible, meaning that there are plenty of video games available to be played by visitors. From the giant Pong screen to a classic game of Duck Hunt to the colorful Arcade, this museum is a must-visit for anybody that enjoys playing video games.
Sci-Tech Discovery Center
The focus of the Sci-Tech Discovery Center, which was established in 2004, is on cultivating public interest in science, technology and maths, and it has definitely managed to do so. All of the exhibits are educational, and will appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds, with many of the displays being interactive so as to appeal to children. Nano is one of the most interactive exhibits, and presents the fundamentals of nanoscience and engineering, teaching the public about this topic in a fun and hands-on way.
Frisco Art Gallery
With a thoughtfully chosen selection of rotating exhibits, the Frisco Art Gallery offers up some new art each and every time you visit. Featuring both local and international artists, the exhibits range from solo and group shows, and cover a wide variety of subjects. This October, a visit to the Frisco Art Gallery will reward you with the Crème de la Crème: VAGF Member Show, which features the best pieces of work from the creative and talented members of the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco, showcasing the very best of local art talent.
Whether you are interested in the arts or the sciences, the Frisco Discovery Center is guaranteed to have something that appeals to you. With such a diverse array of exhibits, it is easy to spend the entire day exploring the premises, and you are likely to come away from the experience feeling inspired and motivated.
