Each season, Milan Fashion Week sees the city’s cobble-stoned streets turned into stylish catwalks, with a whole host of designers, models, VIPs and fashion lovers gathering in Milan from all over the world. This season saw some one-of-a-kind runway shows along with beautiful collections and some exciting trends to look out for this fall.
Unexpected Runway Shows
One of the most unexpected and talked about shows this season at Milan Fashion Week was the Dolce & Gabbana show, who successfully attempted to bring emotion to the catwalk by focusing on the true importance of family. The collection, titled Viva la Mamma, celebrates motherhood with silk dresses printed with children’s drawings, worn by pregnant models, as well as new mothers holding their babies. Giorgio Armani also tried to bring a sense of feeling onto the runway, by playing a short film by an Oscar winning director before the models walked out. The film featured rocky shores, wind-swept beaches and crashing waves, setting the tone for his collection that featured sandy shades and dramatic evening wear looks. To top it all off, the last model walked out barefoot, acting as though she was dragging her feet through sand, with her head covered in a crystal headdress.
As always, there were certain collections that really stood out, and this season, Jeremy Scott’s was one of them. His New York inspired collection focussed on hip-hop styled streetwear and graffiti printed evening wear, with bold colors and patterns. Going in the opposite direction was Prada, whose runway was created with large purple sand dunes. The models wore dark coats, knee socks, and were overall unusually covered up. Roberto Cavalli’s collection focused on the the magic he creates when designing colorfully sexy maxi and mini dresses. With eye-catching prints and swirling hemlines, the collection had the audience wishing that they were sat on a yacht in St. Tropez.
As is the case with any Fashion Week, the collections shown at Milan Fashion Week gave us a glimpse into some of the fashion trends for this fall and winter. One of the most exciting trends to look forward to is the resurgence of the collar, appearing on everything from knitwear to dresses to jackets. The models at Prada wore sharp collars under tailored tops, while at Fendi and Todds, models were wearing starched white collars and pencil skirts. Footwear was also seen to be taking a new direction, with models sporting hairy loafers, pom-pom stilettos and furry pumps. The fur was also seen on bracelets, presented by Salvatore Ferragamo, and has become one of the most sought-after accessories this season. Other accessories that seemed to be making a comeback were gloves, with three quarter length styles seen on the runways of Dsquared2, Tods, Armani and Prada. From fur-trimmed to metallic to leather, the styles and textures were varied and added another dimension to each outfit.
The ever-successful Milan Fashion Week brought excitement and anticipation to fashion lovers all over the world. Showcasing gorgeous collections and one-of-a-kind pieces, the runways were also filled with all of the trends that you can look forward to seeing in the stores this fall.
